Academies

academy building

The Academy Networks directorate has been set up within the SSAT to support the government’s academies programme.

Academies are independent, all-ability, state schools supported by sponsors. They replace one or more existing schools facing challenging circumstances or are established where there is a need for additional school places.

Academies Annual Conference

Celebrating progress and aiming for the future

The Academy Networks team at the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust are pleased to announce the success of their first residential annual Academies conference, held in July this year at the Riverbank Park Plaza in London.

Presentations from keynotes, seminars and rapid information exchanges, as well as the conference handbook, are available online.

About academies

academy classroom

Academies are required to teach a broad and balanced curriculum while meeting National Curriculum requirements for core subjects. They have additional freedoms and flexibilities to use innovative approaches to areas such as leadership, organisation and the curriculum.

Academies have a key part to play in the regeneration of communities offering local solutions for local needs.

A key role of the Academy Networks directorate is to integrate academies into SSAT's network of over 3,000 schools, helping them to become part of our growing and supportive system.

You can find out more about what support services are on offer, as well as the results from a recent survey on academies' work on the new diplomas, and with schools in the independent sector.
