The dual themes of this section are the curricular bones of our secondary school system. Whatever the generic requirements of specialist and aspiring schools, the nature of its specialism gives a school much of its distinctive identity and, not infrequently, its inspiration.

A large number of schools continue to value support for the community aspect of specialist designation, also to be found in this section. The emphasis on such areas as partnerships between schools and effective business links is now being further expanded with the wider potential community role being offered to high performing specialist schools and the concept of the extended school.
